<p><strong>How To Succeed</strong></p>
<p>1)    Know what you want</p>
<p>2)    Know why you want it</p>
<p>3)    Figure out a plan on how to get it</p>
<p>4)    Start following your plan</p>
<p>5)    Do the plan</p>
<p>6)    Review the plan to make sure you’re on track</p>
<p>7)    Continue following the plan or revise as needed to get back on track</p>
<p>8)    Don’t stop until you achieve # 1</p>
<p>9)    Start over again at # 1 (you got what you wanted, figure out what’s next)</p>
<p><strong>Having Mentors</strong></p>
<p>When you need to learn something, find a mentor. A mentor is defined as an experienced adviser and supporter, someone who knows what you need to learn or knows where to find it.</p>
<p>When can a mentor help you? See the nine points above, but, remember that the same person might not be the right mentor for all nine points. I have many mentors, what I need to learn determines which one I go to.</p>
<p>Too many times, promoters of network marketing try to push off on us that this is an easy business. It is simple, not easy, it’s hard work. If your mentor or your upline are honest, they will tell you so. It takes persistence, courage, willingness to learn and apply what you learn, not taking rejection personally, figuring out how and where to find people to talk to about your business or about your product.</p>
<p>Don’t be afraid to ask for help. If you ask someone for help and they can’t or won’t, keep asking, the right mentor is out there.</p>
<p>Persist until you learn how to do the business, persist till you find the right mentor(s), persist till you achieve your dreams.</p>

<p><strong>Where Has This Book Been All My Life?</strong></p>
<p>Ever pick up a book and have it just be so… right, so spot on, so personal and intimate to who you are and what you want in life; that you couldn’t put it down?</p>
<p>It doesn’t happen very often, and I read a lot and enjoy reading anything; history, fiction, economics, business, network marketing books, Harry Potter, sci fi; it’s one of my favorite pastimes, but moments like that where someone says exactly what I think are rare.</p>
<p>I hope I’m the only person who’s never read this book, but I have a hunch I’m in good company. I would guess I could probably ask forty or fifty networkers if they’ve read this book and I’d probably get forty or fifty no’s even though it’s considered a classic in network marketing.</p>
<p><strong>What Book, Who Wrote It?</strong></p>
<p>John Milton Fogg is the author, and the book is <em>The Greatest Networker In The World</em>. If you’ve read books or magazines on or about the network marketing industry, you’ve probably run across John’s name and never thought anything more about it.</p>
<p>Here’s a short self-description from John on his website; “For more than 20 years I&#8217;ve been a writer, teacher, author, speaker &amp; coach. Ask me what I do and I&#8217;ll probably say, ‘I&#8217;m a writer.’ Ask my friends and they&#8217;ll say, ‘He&#8217;s a mentor.’ They&#8217;re right. That&#8217;s my purpose, passion &amp; joy.</p>
<p>“I don&#8217;t claim to be <em>The Greatest Networker in the World</em>, and I am the guy that wrote the book, which having sold more than a million copies is one of the highest-ever selling network marketing titles.”</p>
<p><strong>Has He Been Reading My Notes?</strong></p>
<p>Here’s the part that really got to me and had tears welling up in my eyes:</p>
<p>“I just want to be a success, “ I told him, emotion troubling my words a little. “I’m so sick and tired of the sameness … to give my wife and kids the things they deserve. Disney World, “ I said, “I want to take the kids to Disney World – and the Grand Canyon. I want to be free. I want time … creativity … control…. And yes, I do want to be a pioneer – again. I loved doing that….”</p>
<p>“But…?” he asked quietly.</p>
<p>“But, <em>I don’t know how,”</em> I answered…  (End of quote)</p>
<p>I must be hanging out with the wrong people, nobody I know has ever mentioned this book to me …</p>
<p><strong>Closing Out For This Edition</strong></p>
<p>In the next paragraph, the narrator of the story goes on to say “I see other people doing it. Lots of them. So I know it can be done. And I know they’re not any smarter or better than me, or work any harder. It’s just that – I can’t seem to get it to work for me. I try. I really do. I make the calls… run my names list. It just doesn’t work.”</p>
<p>I am sure I’m going to find more pearls of wisdom as I continue reading this book (the quotes above are from page 13), and I will share them with you. But this one couldn’t wait as I knew it would speak to others out there.</p>
<p>But I wanted to close with this thought, no matter how good, bad or indifferent  you are at “doing” network marketing, you increase your chances for achieving your dreams if you pick a company that is going in the direction you want to go.</p>

<p>For instance, if things aren’t going the way you planned, you can  learn more, plan better, do more, do a lot more, do something different,  revise your game plan, find someone that’s gotten to where you want to  be and ask for their help, work harder, work smarter, find a partner,  find a better <em></em>partner, get rid of the wrong partner, find a mentor, find a better mentor, etc.</p>
<p>You can also find out what’s motivating you, what’s your passion, why  do you want what you want. If you say you want to be rich, why? What  would being<em></em> rich enable you to do? If you want more free time,  why? What do you want to do with that free time? Travel, study, go back  to school, be a missionary? What’s your real objective?</p>
<p>I read a great book on this subject a couple years ago called “Living  With Passion” by Peter L. Hirsch. In Chapter 3, he gives an exercise in  figuring out your purpose and values.</p>
<p>Once you have t<em></em>hat thing, that passion, that goal, your why in front of you, it beco<em></em>mes much harder to give up on yourself and easier to motivate you<em></em>rself to do whatever you need to do to turn the situation around.</p>

<p>Also, one of my favorite mentors happens to think it’s a great idea as well, and we’re both working our butts off and I ran out of time to write my blog the last two weeks. Does this mean I’ve lost interest in network marketing or in my blog? Au contraire.</p>
<p>I am more excited about it than ever. You can create your fortune in network marketing and I want to help you do so.</p>
<p><strong>Why I’m Writing This Particular Post</strong></p>
<p>Couple of reasons. Number 1, I didn’t want you to think I’d forgotten about you.</p>
<p>Number 2, I got some criticism, partly justified, partly not. The part I didn’t feel was justified, was complaining that I was spending too much time talking about the company that I’m working with. With a total of 30 posts, 3 posts talking about a company that I am completely flipped out about is too much?</p>

<p><strong>What’s An Adage?</strong></p>
<p>According to the dictionary, an adage is a saying that sets forth a general truth, and that has gained credit through long use.</p>
<p>One popular example of an adage is Murphy’s Law, one of the variations of which is “If anything can possibly go wrong, it will.”</p>
<p>Another is “Don’t put the cart before the horse.” Meaning to do things in the correct sequence.</p>
<p><strong>If It’s Too Good To Be True…</strong></p>
<p>The adage “if it’s too good to be true, it probably is,” has been with us for a long time and most of us use it frequently to quickly discard things that seem just too good to be true. By using this adage, we save ourselves time and energy and frequently money.</p>
<p>While researching this adage for this post, I came across a great little blog post from a few years ago, that I thought explained its use very well.</p>
<p>“I’m sure you’ve all heard the old adage, ‘If something seems too good to be true, it probably is.’  And I’m sure you, like me, can recount many instances of when you fell for some scheme or ploy that turned out just that way.  At the same time, I’m sure you can count many blessings that have come into your life that, if you stopped to think about them long enough, you would have thought were ‘too good to be true.’  Maybe it’s a relationship, a job, a salary, or just something that years ago, you would never have dreamed would have happened to you.  Yet, it <em>did</em> happen to you.” – excerpted from <a href="http://www.debramoorhead.com/blog/index.php/when-something-seems-too-good-to-be-true">debramoorhead.com</a></p>
<p><strong>Maybe I’m Wrong, But…</strong></p>

<p><strong>The Books Say The Egg</strong></p>
<p>It seems like every book I’ve read says you should begin your network marketing career in this fashion:</p>
<p>1)    Find a great company with a wonderful product</p>

<p>4)    Learn the ropes</p>

<p>6)    Find others to duplicate these steps</p>
<p>That would be the egg.</p>
<p><strong>But The Chicken</strong></p>
<p>Might look like this:</p>
<p>1)    A friend or relative tells you about the company he’s working with</p>
<p>2)    You sign up because you like the product or the company or your friend</p>
<p>3)    You don’t know what to do and neither does the person who signed you up</p>
<p>4)    You tell a few people about it and nobody else is interested</p>
<p>5)    You quit</p>
<p>Or maybe like this, which it did for me:</p>
<p>1)    My brother tells me about the company he’s working with</p>
<p>2)    I sign up</p>
<p>3)    With the help of my brother’s sponsor, I sign up someone</p>
<p>4)    That person makes several sales</p>
<p>5)    I get excited and try to repeat steps 3 &amp; 4</p>
<p>6)    Number 3 runs out of warm market to talk to and loses interest</p>
<p>7)    I move on to another job and while not losing interest, don’t network market for several years</p>
<p>8)    I read books, I start and run my own traditional business</p>
<p>9)    I sign up for another network marketing company and fail</p>
<p>10)     I keep running my business</p>
<p>11)     I read more books</p>
<p>12)     Etc.</p>
<p><strong>The Reality</strong></p>
<p>I’m guessing that most people reading blogs about network marketing or home businesses or work from home jobs have experienced some version of the chicken scenario; jumping in and trying to figure it out.</p>
<p>The ones who persist through the failures and keep learning eventually discover that there is a reason most books give you the first version, i.e. the egg: <em>you increase your chances of success by doing things in that sequence</em>.</p>
<p>It doesn’t mean the chicken is wrong, or the pig or the cow or the bull moose; if you keep your eye on the goal, you’re going to get there. (For more on the goal, see my earlier post “<a href="../why-oh-why/">Why, Oh Why</a>.”)</p>
<p>I want to help you speed up the process.</p>
<p><strong>What Do I Do If I’m already A Chicken?</strong></p>
<p>Keep going! The only thing that can stop you is if you quit. If you know where you want to go, you can get there. As Jim Rohn once said, <em>“working hard on your job makes you a living, working hard on yourself makes you a fortune.”</em><em></em></p>
<p>The difference between the first chicken who gave up and the second chicken (me) is that I didn’t give up. I kept working on myself, reading books, finding mentors, etc.</p>
<p>If you’re already in a company and you’re happy with the products but not so much with your sponsor, find a mentor, read a book, learn how to talk to people. Develop the skills and attitudes you need to attract people into your life, whether mentors, teachers, or business partners.</p>
<p><strong>What If My Company or Product Isn’t So Great?</strong></p>
<p>Hey, it happens. The initial hype can generate enthusiasm for a company or a product that isn’t that good. Don’t throw out the baby with the bath water! Find a better company/product and go to work.</p>
<p>Not only will your attitude be better, your honesty with yourself and your prospects will improve and so will your results.</p>
